Safety is everyone’s top concern especially when it comes to online dating. You know the standard safety tips: “Tell someone where you’re going” and “meet somewhere public,” just to name a few. However, these aren’t the only ways to keep yourself safe when meeting your online love in real life. There are some more obscure tips and tricks that you may have not known can be critical to your safety.

Carry Pepper Spray

Many people, especially woman, do not realize the safety behind pepper spray/mace. These liquid come in easy open and easy access bottles. One good spray to the eyes can bring a grown man to their knees. These sprays are sold in key chain units that can easily be clipped onto your keys for that trip to the dark parking lot or the moment you are alone with the person you’ve just met. They also make units that don’t even look like pepper spray, just keychains; keeping your protected and stylish.

Never Go Straight Home

Sometimes it isn’t’ during the date that you get hurt, sometimes it’s after. There have been many cases of both men and women being followed home after a date and assaulted at their own residence. When you leave the place you have met your date try no tot go straight home. Maybe go to a drug store or gas station first. Try to see if anyone is following you. If you think someone may be following you then make four right turns. If they also make four right turns it means they’ve gone in a square and are in fact following you; call the police and keep driving. By not going straight home, you will not allow a possibly harmful date to know where you live.

Watch The Alcohol

Many people believe that a few drinks and feeling tipsy won’t hurt them; epically if they watch to make sure no one has tampered with their drinks. However, alcohol itself can numb your reactions and make you more vulnerable. So, watch how much you are drinking. Just because it isn’t being tampered with doesn’t mean it is safe to drink a lot.

Keep Your Phone on You

Your phone is your lifeline to the outside world. Although many of us leave our phones unattended at times, when meeting an online date for the first time it’s important to make sure you always have your phone. This way, you can call for help at a moment’s notice and you also don’t give your date possible access to personal information. You don’t always think about how leaving your phone on a restaurant table could be dangerous for you.

Although these may not be common practices for you, when meeting a stranger from an online dating site, they may just save your life. Not everyone is a bad person but in this world, it’s truly “better safe than sorry” when it comes to your safety.
